There`s only one
Borussia
!
Many people
were puzzled by
the oddly-accebted chants of "Liverpool ! Liverpool" coming from the
Road
End during the recent game with Wimbledon. No, it wasn`t the Norwegian
Reds (They tend to go one The Kop) but supporters of German side
Borussia
Moenchengladbach.
For several years
now they have
been visting Anfield to support The Reds and were once again
conspicuous
by both their numbers and their black, green and white colours. One
hundred
BMG fans travelled over this time, the fifth official "Fanprojekt" trip
to Liverpool.
A chairmam of one
of the individual
fanclubs,
"Jonny"
Polcher, from the
"VFL Borussia
Fan-Club Eifelpower
Polch" said:
"It was a great
trip ...
we brought 12 members over from our club, I also went to support
Liverpool
in Southampton and in Strasbourg (It was bad !), On the Sunday after
the
Dons we played football vs. The ISC and we lost 5-3 ... it was not so
good
! *s*.
The "friendship"
between BMG
and LFC has its official roots inte Hillsborough-disaster nearly a
decade
ago. In June 1991 BMG fan-clubs organised a series of events that
raised
21.000 DM for the disaster fund, the cash being presented to Trevor
Hicks,
Ron Yeats and ex-director Sid Moss. The BMG fan-clubs are proud of the
fact that they were "the first (and only) German supporters club to be
united whit Liverpool under the banner " You`ll Never Walk Alone ". "
A year later, in
August`92,
100 BMG fans visted Merseyside to pay their respects at the
Hillsborough
Memorial and stand on the Spion Kop.
These visited
usually co-incided
with fans`football games vs. the ISC or other Supporters Clubs. In 1995
how ever the Fanprojekt again made the lengthy trek to Anfield despide
having no matches organised: "to show we want build the friendship
high
and to party with our friends from the ISC". You may remember their
visit
in the pouring rain for draw with QPR. They brought 150 fans with them.
In July 1995
the pre-season
tournament in Moenchengladbach meant that Reds could travel over to
Germany
and savour the Fanprojekt hospitality .
Thomas
"Tower" Weinmann and "Jonny"
said: " In the pubs and bars of Moenchengladbach the supporters of both
teams were twinnned in a big party".
The
tour would be remembered more for the party than the football as
Liverpool
crashed 5-0 to Ajax before beating Fiorentina 3-2 on penalties (after
1-1
draw) in the thirdplace play-off. BMG were now German FA Cup holders
(their
first trophy for 16 years !) and were involved in the CWCup in 95-96.
Even
so, 75 fans forked out extra cash from their European away games funds
to travel to Anfield.
Later
that summer BMG again visited Merseyside for the pre-season John Moores
Centenary Tournament at Goodison and Anfiled. We never got the chance
to
meet Borussia after losing 2-0 in the opening game to Porto at Anfield,
and then drawing 0-0 with Everton. 150 Borussia supporters saw their
team
emergh from the tournament as winners.
Last
season 40 fans were lucky enough to see the the 3-0 win over Aston
Villa,
and this season that number leapt back up to 100 for the Wimbledon
game.
All in all, its a pretty impressive record for the Fanprojekt.
It
comes as a great surprice to many Liverpool fans to find supporters of
a foreign football team travelling hundreds of miles to support The
Reds.
Borussia fans interest in Liverpool goes way back before the events of
Hillsborough.
"Jonny"
Polcher explains:" in the 70s and 80s all German fans had their
English
supporter idols. At that time the English supporters made the best
atmosphere
in stadiums - though it`s not so good now. I think the problem is the
shit
all-seater stadiums! In Moenchengladbach mast Fans were very
sympathectic
to Liverpool - besed on the many Eurepean games between Borussia and
Liverpool.
Even now many "Borussen" stand with Liverpool shirts and scarfs on the
"Nordkurve" at our ground. We sing "Liverpool!" and You`ll Never Walk
Alone".
"
Apparently
many of Borussia`s opponents are astonsihed to see Borussia fans arrive
at away grounds chanting for Liverpool.
IIt`s
no sureprice that the "Borussen" chose us as their role models. We
played
them on several occasions back in the 70`s and all were highprofile,
important
games. They could not have failed to be impressed by the travelling
Reds
in Moenchengladbach in `73 nor by the hordes who descended on Rome in
1977.
Their last visit in March 1978 for the Eurepean Cup semi-final
also
saw an amazing night at Anfield. I clearly recall Borussia players
saying
how awesome the Kop were that evening.
The
on the pitch celebrations as we overturned a 2-1 deficit to win 4-2 on
aggregate are now legendary.
We
first crossed swords with Borussia in the UEFA Cup final in 1973.
The
first leg was washed out by a torrential rainstrom which flooded the
pitch.
The game has lsted just 30 minutes and Liverpool had looked like
struggling
against a very good Borussia side. However, Bob Pailey had spotted a
weakness
in the German defence - they looked vulnerable to the high ball.
Shankly
acted swiftly and dropped miniscule Brian Hall in fvour of John
Toshack.
The change worked like a dream and the reds swept to a 3-0 victory,
Tosh`s
aerial prowess proving decisive: the highlight of the evening was
probably
a superb penalty save by Ray Clemence.
The
second leg in the Bökelberg was never going to be a forality.
Borussia
tore into the reds and had pulled two goals back in the first half.
However,
Liverpool survived the strom and by half-time it was clear that the
Germans
had run out of steam . We were never in any trouble in the second half
and went on the cature our first Eurpean trophy. At the end of the game
hundreds of Liverpool fans swept onto the pitch to celebrate with the
team
as captain Tommy Smith paraded the UEFA Cup.
Four
years later we met again - this time in the Eurepean Cup final in Rome.
27000 Liverpool fans took over the Olympic Stadium and must have
impressed
the travelling German support. Liverpool controlled the first hald and
went in a half-time a goal up thanks to Terry McDermott`s superb goal.
In the second half Allan Simonsen fired in a blistering equaliser for
Borussia.
Ray Clemence said later he was never beaten by a better shot. In the
following
ten minutes Liverpool could have lost the game as Borussia powered
forward.
Clemnece made one fantastic save from Bonhof to keep the score
level.
As
in 73, the Reds held out and clawed their way back into the game. A
headed
goal from Tommy Smith gave us the lead and Borussia`s challenge faded.
A late penalty from Phil Neal secured our first European Cup win.
The
follwing season we met Borussia again in the Champions Cup:
this
time at he semi-final stage. The Bökelberg was deemed too small to
stage the tie and the game was moved to Düsseldorf. A late Bonhof
free-kick that went straight through Clemence`s hands gave Borussia a
slender
2-1 lead, after David Johnson had equalised with a diving header.
Back at Anfield - in the front of a massive crod of 55000 screaming
Reds
- Liverpool swept to a 3-0 win and secured their place in a second
successive
final.
That`s
three out of three as far as we`re concerned - so it`s to the Borussia
fans credit that they adopted us as heir English team.
And
having met some of their fans I´m glad that we have such a good
relationship
with them: they love their football, they love
their
team and they love their beer - my kinda people !

Borussia
Supporters Clubs & The "Fanprojekt
There
are about 280 supporters clubs spread over Germany, Belgium,
Luxembourg,
Switzerland, Greece , and even one club in Hong Kong (the "Rising Sun
Foals`!).
The
Fanprojekt is an umbrella organisation for supporters in
individualgroups
to co-ordinate travel, ticket requests and other associated activities.
One
of the more important aspects of their work is liaison with German FA
(DFB)
an the police. In this respect they`re to the FSA over here - but tied
to the interests of one set of supporters. They are also committed to
improving
relations between rival sets of supporters and eradicating match-day
violence.
They
are heavily supported by the club itself and have their own
representative
at Borussia. There is club employee named Holger
Spiecker, who is the only supporter in Germany who has a job in a
football
club to represent supporters`interests.
The
Fanprojekt even have their own souvenir shop selling specific "
Borussia
Fanprojekt"-merchandise.
